Tips for maintaining swimming pools during the winter

11/18/2022

The cold has already arrived and this affects the state of the pools, raising doubts about what to do to keep them in good condition residential pool plans. For us, the best thing to do is to preserve the pool water and take certain measures for its correct maintenance through chlorination.

Conserving most of the pool water during the period that it is not going to be used brings functional, economic and environmental benefits, since a large number of liters of water are saved, reducing spending and the ecological footprint. At the same time, the pool structure is more protected from the water, which prevents damage to the surface. How to do it? So:

1. Cleaning the pool

As a first step, we will clean the bottom and the walls, removing any leaves or dirt that have fallen into the pool. We can make use of the leaf collector, to remove the elements from the surface, and the pool cleaner, for a more thorough cleaning. In this way, we will avoid deposits that could cause alterations in the properties of the water and we will make it easier for the products to work correctly.

2. PH of the water and chlorine

We must check the pH of the water and the chlorination of the pool periodically, recommending keeping the pH of the water between 7.2 and 7.6 points. Once done, we will proceed to introduce the chlorine to disinfect the water and, after 24 hours, we will introduce the winterizing product.

This product preserves the water conditions and prevents microorganisms from reproducing. Of course, the ideal is to pour it when the water temperature drops below 14 degrees Celsius and with the purification filter in operation to achieve optimal distribution of the liquid.

3. Clean the filter

We must carry out a complete disinfection and washing of the treatment plant filter, since it is in charge of maintaining the physical cleanliness of the water. Therefore, the filter and the water pump must be in good condition so that the particles remain in the treatment plant and do not return to the pool water. Regarding the moment in which to do it, there is no specific time, since it will depend on what the pressure gauge indicates, which is the device in charge of indicating the level of dirt in the filter.

4. Recommendations for extremely cold climates

In areas with temperatures below 5 degrees, where there is a possibility of water freezing, it is recommended to take greater precautions to avoid possible breakages in the facilities. Some tricks are: reduce the water level about 5 centimeters below the skimmers, stop the electrical installation and empty the filter of the treatment plant. We can also incorporate special floats on the edges to prevent the pool from freezing.

5. Install a cover

When choosing a cover, it must be opaque to prevent sunlight from passing through it, thus preventing microorganisms and fungi from being created. The most common are those made of polyester with a PVC coating.
